There is nothing wrong with the engine dynamometer. We have an excellent one, and we use it constantly for engine development. As a tuning tool, it has limits – namely the fact the engine has to be on the stand, not in the vehicle.

Enter the chassis dyno. It offers unparalleled tuning capabilities for any vehicle – everyday street car or truck, high performance or race car. Roll the vehicle onto the rollers, lash it down, hook up the telemetry and start it up. It is quick and convenient.

But more importantly, the chassis dyno can provide a real time picture of what is happening within the vehicle’s drivetrain. It is a more real world reflection of the vehicle’s overall power transmission system.

Pro Car selected the Dyno Dynamics 450 DS Twin Retarder dual two-wheel drive unit after talking with many tuner shops, and manufacturers. One of the key selling points was the ability of the 450 DS to connect a laptop computer to the dyno by a Bluetooth® connection, and modulate the vehicle’s behavior from the driver’s seat, and monitor the real-time telemetry feed.

The Dyno Dynamics 450 DS will…

  • Accept two wheel drive cars or trucks weighing up to 9000 lb (4WD can be tested in 2WD mode)
  • Accept up to 2400 horsepower at the wheels
  • Accept up to 9000 ft.-lb. of torque at the wheels

While a chassis dyno is attractive to high-performance customers, it is also very useful for all vehicles. The Dyno Dynamics 450 DS will measure power and torque at the drive wheels, plus troubleshoot a wide range of engine and drivetrain issues – issues which static tests in a traditional service setting are difficult to accomplish. The technician can change the load against the engine which can mimic hills, on-ramp acceleration, stop-and-go driving, which can uncover a problem without putting a technician on the highway.

This is the ideal tuner testing tool, particularly for vehicles with electronic engine controls, since it allows the air-fuel map as well as the ignition maps to be modified on the fly. It allows the technician to trouble-shoot problems, to tune for maximized horsepower or for maximum fuel efficiency – or anywhere between!

OUR STORY

Pro Car Associates was founded in 1969 by a pair of young enterprising engineers with a passion for drag racing, Chuck Wright and Jim Cavallero, who also owned Diamond Racing Engines (later to become Diamond Racing Pistons). Their focus was to make a strong impact upon the motorsports marketplace, which was undergoing explosive growth.

They chose to enter drag racing’s flourishing Pro Stock class with a 1970 Camaro built and prepared by Pro Car, and driven by rookie Jim Hayter. The effort was highly competitive, with Hayter running consistently in the 9.70s, and a threat to win on any given Sunday. Hayter’s effort in the new team’s Camaro did not go unnoticed, winning the National Hot Rod Association’s Rookie of the Year award for the 1970 season.

The success of the Pro Stock effort placed the Pro Car name at front of the ranks of engine and chassis builders of the period, and served as a springboard for both men to build their careers. Although the partnership was short lived, and Chuck bought Jim’s interest in Pro Car, the two have remained close friends.
