There is little argument that the dyno cell is an excellent tool to measure engine performance. However, there are differences in dyno cells and dyno operators.

Part of the difference is in the equipment in the cell and how the cell is constructed. Like everything at Pro Car, Chuck and Chris Wright were not satisfied with “normal.” They felt if Pro Car was going to have a dynamometer, it needed to reflect their determination to evaluate not only horsepower and torque, but to do so in a condition approaching real-world conditions.

For those reasons, Pro Car built, from the ground up, a system which is at O.E.M. standards. Drawing on Chuck’s years of experience with the General Motors performance programs, and Chris’s knowledge of electronic systems, they have created a dyno system rated for 2500 horsepower at over 10,000 RPM,utilizing the latest DEPAC dyno system augmented with automation and control products from Schneider Electric.

The Pro Car cell allows complete atmospheric control and real-world modeling capabilities. The state-of-the-art cell telemetry monitors a wide range of functions relating to engine operation and efficiencies. This, combined with the ability to manipulate atmospheric pressures and humidity, allows the Pro Car dyno system to address the effects of altitude changes from track to track, or the effects of climate swings over the course of a race weekend. Additionally, when interfaced with existing data from data acquisition, the dyno can mimic lap cycles and allow tuning changes to be evaluated.

Chuck Wright, across his career has thousands of dyno pulls done on a wide variety of engines, from high output inline 4-cylinder engines, to turbo charged V-6s, to large inch Mountain Motor Pro Stock and Pro Mod (plus marine) engines, including turbo charged, supercharged or nitrous assisted applications. In addition to seeking the top end of the curve, he also has learned to see and hear what the engine is telling him on the stand, often avoid a catastrophic failure before it occurs. Chris Wright has learned his father’s skills and coupled with his electronics expertise, has become a superior operator in his own right.

OUR STORY

Pro Car Associates was founded in 1969 by a pair of young enterprising engineers with a passion for drag racing, Chuck Wright and Jim Cavallero, who also owned Diamond Racing Engines (later to become Diamond Racing Pistons). Their focus was to make a strong impact upon the motorsports marketplace, which was undergoing explosive growth.

They chose to enter drag racing’s flourishing Pro Stock class with a 1970 Camaro built and prepared by Pro Car, and driven by rookie Jim Hayter. The effort was highly competitive, with Hayter running consistently in the 9.70s, and a threat to win on any given Sunday. Hayter’s effort in the new team’s Camaro did not go unnoticed, winning the National Hot Rod Association’s Rookie of the Year award for the 1970 season.

The success of the Pro Stock effort placed the Pro Car name at front of the ranks of engine and chassis builders of the period, and served as a springboard for both men to build their careers. Although the partnership was short lived, and Chuck bought Jim’s interest in Pro Car, the two have remained close friends.
